Shocking: Travelocity Shuts Down Its India Portal, Permanently

Travelocity India LogoTravelocity’s India website is shutdown, permanently. This is indeed shocking. Reason for this move is unknown at this moment. We’re trying to reach out to Travelocity India team. Travelocity global launched its India portal in 2007 and at that point in time their strategy was to focus on hotels.

In August 2009, Travelocity acquired TravelGuru.com, a hotel inventory major in India with 6000 hotels. In June 2012, Yatra acquired TravelGuru from Travelocity.

Travelocity’s India website is shutdown since yesterday. The website says “This India-specific site is not operational anymore; however we are re-directing you to our global site, Travelocity.com where you will find all the options you may be looking for!”.

We believe the shutdown operation is still going on at the backend. Because, upon selecting another country’s website (say U.S), the site detects the IP address as India and asks for confirmation – Whether you want to navigate to India site or the US.

There are lot many travel startups coming up, investments flowing in and international travel players are setting up their India operation (example, Expedia). This move from Travelocity India at this point in time is truly shocking.

Travelocity global’s one of the development centers is in Bangalore.
