Startup Spotlight: TravelKhana: Order Food Online While Booking Your Train Journey
How many of you have travelled long distance (more than 6-8 hours) in Indian trains? During the journey, many of us had dreamt of having hot lip-smacking food. Wouldn’t it be great to order food of your choice online while booking your train ticket so that it can be delivered at your seat in train? That’s exactly the service TravelKhana offers to train travellers. TravelKhana was founded by Pushpinder Singh and Matteo Chaimpo. We had the opportunity to discuss with Pushpinder (IIT-BHU, BITS, Pilani) on TravelKhana’s offerings. Read on to know more.
What’s “TravelKhana” into and what problem are you trying to solve?
Travelkhana is a marketplace that connects passengers with several restaurants on the Indian Rail network. It offers a variety of choices to a Railway passenger so that the passengers can order food as per their liking and at their price point while they are travelling.
Why only trains? Why not bus too?
Travelkhana aim to provide complete solution around Travel Ecosystem. Travel in India has lot of inefficiency and our mission is to remove those inefficiencies through operational excellence. We will cover Bus and Air at a later stage and work has already begun on that.
Which all cities you operate now?
We operate in 30 cities as of now. The prominent locations we cover are – Ajmer, Asansol Junction, Bhopal Junction, Gorakphur, Gwalior Junction, Jaipur, Jhansi Jn, Kota Junction, New Delhi, Ratlam Junction.
A customer can order food while on travel in train? Is there a time limit before which we should order food?
Travelkhana will take your order with a minimum of 1 hour of lead time before the train arrival at a particular station.
How do you ensure timely delivery?
We ensure that using our patented technology platform that also ensures that there are no misses.
Is there a plan to start your own restaurant at all train stations?
Travelkhana does not have a plan to start its own restaurant as of now but we will watch the overall business scenario to consider this option later.
What’s the typical age range of your customers? What profile/segment of customers you target at?
Anyone who is travelling in train is our target audience. The most common profile of travelkhana user is a frequent traveler between age group of 24 to 50, who craves for good quality of food during travel.
Did you receive any funding? or you expecting in near future?
We have received the seed funding round and are in consultations with venture capitalists for further funding needed
How are travellers reacting towards TravelKhana so far?
Responses so far has been overwhelming. We are getting very encouraging responses from Travelkhana’s users.We would like to share few messages from a real customer:
